Life Imitates Art
Think back (some of us WAY back!) to elementary school. Do you remember sitting in art class and being introduced to the colour wheel? Being taught how to search for corresponding colours and learning how to figure out which ones work best together? Well, if memory should fail you here, or if you were too busy turning the colour wheel into a paper airplane, let’s revisit a few key points and then we will fill you in on how this can transfer to making colour choices for table settings, floral arrangements, and even dress selections:
- Complementary colours: two colours that are opposite one another on the colour wheel (e.g. Blue and orange). This would be a bold choice for a fun celebration of any type.
- Analogous colours: colours that contain a common hue and are found next to each other on the colour wheel (e.g. Violet, red-violet, and red). When paired together, they create a sense of harmony – perfect for a romantic wedding or subdued corporate event.
Each person’s taste in art is very personal. A painting can illicit feelings of nostalgia, happiness, or sorrow based on the arrangement and choices of colour and imagery used. If you look at a painting by Jackson Pollock and you fall in love with the random array of paint splotches and vibrant colour, why not use this as inspiration for the colour scheme of your upcoming event? The smile that originally arose from your first glance at a painting or work of art will spread to your guests as they walk into a room that brings it to life.
