The Sound of Music

There is no question that music plays a significant role in everyone’s life, whether you realize it or not.  For some, music inspires us to run faster.  For others, it serves as the perfect compliment to a romantic candlelit dinner.   All it takes is one song to bring us back to high school dances (a little “More Than Words” by Extreme, anyone?!) or a painful break-up.  It might be the words in the song or simply the melody but like a piece of art, a person’s choice of music is individual and very personal.

When planning an event, your choice of music should always be an important consideration.  It works hand-in-hand with other key components of your party such as food and décor to ultimately create a memorable experience for your guests.

We were recently involved with Vancouver’s TEDxVancouver event where the sole purpose was to inspire guests.  The final performance of the day was a duet between a beat boxer and cellist and what transpired was nothing short of amazing.  Check out their amazing performance at:

Okay, Okay, We’ll Bite.

After months of seeing the cast of Twilight being stocked by paps in Vancouver and enduring the “are they or aren’t they” Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart debate in every magazine and entertainment outlet around, the big day has arrived.

Yes.  After months of anticipation, the Twilight Saga, New Moon, comes to a movie theatre near you today.  For those die-hard fans who are currently braving the elements to view it for the first time – this suggestion is for you!  Why not celebrate that the wait is finally over by indulging in a glass of merlot from Vampire vineyards?

Rumour has it that the Vampire Vineyards are actually owned by a circle of vampires and their company’s founder, Michael Machat, an entertainment attorney from New York, is actually just a front.

To check out their products or to read their “Vampire blog” (we kid you not!), you can visit their site at:

Life Imitates Art

Think back (some of us WAY back!) to elementary school.  Do you remember sitting in art class and being introduced to the colour wheel?  Being taught how to search for corresponding colours and learning how to figure out which ones work best together?  Well, if memory should fail you here, or if you were too busy turning the colour wheel into a paper airplane, let’s revisit a few key points and then we will fill you in on how this can transfer to making colour choices for table settings, floral arrangements, and even dress selections:

  1. Complementary colours: two colours that are opposite one another on the colour wheel (e.g. Blue and orange).  This would be a bold choice for a fun celebration of any type.
  2. Analogous colours:  colours that contain a common hue and are found next to each other on the colour wheel (e.g. Violet, red-violet, and red).  When paired together, they create a sense of harmony – perfect for a romantic wedding or subdued corporate event.

Each person’s taste in art is very personal.  A painting can illicit feelings of nostalgia, happiness, or sorrow based on the arrangement and choices of colour and imagery used.  If you look at a painting by Jackson Pollock and you fall in love with the random array of paint splotches and vibrant colour, why not use this as inspiration for the colour scheme of your upcoming event?  The smile that originally arose from your first glance at a painting or work of art will spread to your guests as they walk into a room that brings it to life.

If you need some help to get you started, check out the vibrant work of Vancouver artist Diane Lefroy:

A little sample…

We chewed on possible theme ideas for future blog posts for quite awhile until it occurred to us – “Firsts” are happening all around.  Weddings, babies, new jobs and, for Kai, actually SEEING a blog for the first time, not to mention actually writing one!

But to delve right in and skim the top of each of these “Firsts” would not be advantageous to anyone.  These are big moments in a person’s life and deserve a more focused and in depth look into ways to make them unforgettable.

So for now, in typical Spanish style, we will provide a little “tapas” inspired teaser and let you in on a couple of little secrets that might help you plan your big day.

Weddings

Bored of the usual crock pots and “seen everywhere” casual dishes?  Check out Kate Spade’s new line of home decor for your registration list:

New Baby

There are trends on the catwalk, landscape design and, yes, apparently, in nursery rooms too!  Who knew.  If you’re wanting to go beyond wall murals and wicker, check out this article by Celebrity Designer Kenneth Brown:

TEDxVancouver – November 21, 2009

About TEDx

About TEDx, x=independently organized event
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TED has created a program called TEDx where local, self-organized events can bring people together to share a TED-like experience.

At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x=independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.
